Adverts can be a nuisance when watching on-demand TV. They can be intrusive and take away from the user experience. This article is about how to deal with adverts on Channel 5’s streaming service, known as My5 (now simply branded as 5). We’ll cover what options are actually available — and what isn’t currently on offer.

The honest answer is that fully removing adverts from 5 is not straightforward. Unlike some streaming services, 5 does not currently offer a paid ad-free subscription tier. The service is free to watch, and advertising is how it is funded.

Is There a Paid Ad-Free Option on 5?

No — not at the time of writing. Channel 5’s own help centre states clearly that 5 is not introducing a paid, ad-free subscription feature at this time. The service remains 100% free with no subscription fee.

This means the service does not offer:

  • A “5 Premium” or “My5 Premium” plan
  • Individual episode or season purchases
  • A gift card or one-time pass system

If you see any third-party site claiming to sell an ad-free 5 subscription, treat it with caution.

Skipping Ads: Effective Ways to Block Them

Ads can be intrusive and annoying. Fortunately, there are general approaches to reduce ad exposure across streaming sites. Bear in mind that using an ad-blocker on 5 may prevent the site from loading at all, as Channel 5 actively detects ad-blocker software and may block access to content if one is detected.

Use Ad-Blocker Software Ad-blocker software is designed to block unwanted ads from appearing on websites. Popular options include AdBlock, AdBlock Plus, and uBlock Origin. All are available free of charge and can be installed as browser extensions. However, as noted above, these tools are likely to conflict with the 5 player.

Modify Your Browser Settings Most browsers include options to block pop-ups, and extensions such as Privacy Badger can limit some tracking-based advertising. These are useful across the web generally but offer limited benefit on services that gate content behind ad viewing.

Install an Anti-Adware Programme Anti-adware programmes are designed to detect and remove malicious or intrusive ads from your device. Popular options include Malwarebytes and AdwCleaner. These are particularly useful for removing adware that has been installed without your knowledge, rather than for blocking streaming ads.

Use a VPN A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a secure, encrypted connection between your device and a server. This can limit some forms of ad tracking by third-party advertisers. There are many free and paid VPN services available, though a VPN will not typically remove embedded video ads from a streaming service.

How to Watch ITVX Without Ads

If ad-free on-demand viewing is important to you, ITV’s streaming service offers a clearer paid option. Watching ITVX without ads requires a subscription to ITVX Premium:

  1. Go to itv.com/watch/itvx-premium
  2. Subscribe to ITVX Premium (from £5.99 per month)
  3. Log in to your account
  4. Enjoy ad-free content across the ITVX catalogue

ITVX Premium replaced the older ITV Hub+ service. It gives access to an expanded catalogue of shows and boxsets, ad-free, with the option to download content on mobile. As of October 2025, ITVX Premium is also available as an add-on via Amazon Prime Video at the same £5.99/month price point.

Note that ad-free access excludes promotional clips and live TV.

Overall, getting rid of adverts on 5 (My5) is not currently possible through an official paid route. The service is ad-funded and free to use, and there is no premium subscription available. You can attempt to use an ad-blocker via your browser, though this may prevent content from loading. For a genuine ad-free on-demand experience, ITVX Premium remains the closest like-for-like alternative among the UK’s free-to-air broadcaster streaming services.

If you want to keep an eye on whether 5 introduces a paid tier in the future, it is worth checking Channel 5’s help centre directly, as the position may change.
